Jewellery Workshop & Classes
Opened in 2006, Firefly Studio is fitted out to accommodate seven full-time jewellery designer/makers. The open-plan space is a vibrant, creative environment where everything needed to design and make contemporary jewellery is to hand. Having worked in various jewellery workshops, its owner Chris Hawkins set out to combine the best elements of each in this new venture. Three years down the line and the community of jewellers has grown considerably. The atmosphere is one of friendly, industrious professionalism with each pursuing their own endeavors, while sharing skills and information with each other. Alongside the full-time professional jewellers, there are spaces for those who want to take advantage of the facility on a casual or part-time basis. Benches can be rented out on a daily or weekly basis. Evenings are taken up with jewellery courses. Taught in the main by daytime users, they give an introduction to the ancient and diverse craft of jewellery making. Students are encouraged to work on their own projects, while expert tutors are always on hand to advise and instruct. Most people work in silver and semi-precious stones. But wood, plastic and shells have all been incorporated into beautiful jewellery. -
